In a significant move to support the Maldives' environmental goals, Sri Lanka has donated teak plants to the country. The announcement was made by the Maldives’ Environment Minister, Thoriq Ibrahim, during the launch of a 1.4 million tree-planting campaign at the Rosewood Ranfaru Resort.
This donation is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to plant five million trees across the nation during his five-year term. The teak plants, presented on World Environment Day, will be distributed to every inhabited island and resort in the Maldives.
Teak trees hold cultural significance in the Maldives, where the hardwood has long been used in traditional craftsmanship. As part of the broader campaign, the Environment Ministry is working alongside island councils, schools, government entities, and private individuals to ensure the success of this nationwide initiative. Many have already pledged their support.
This collaboration marks an important step toward both environmental sustainability and the preservation of Maldivian heritage.
