Maldives 2.0 Marks the Beginning of a Digital Transformation Era

The Maldives has officially launched the ‘Maldives 2.0’ initiative, a groundbreaking project aimed at revolutionising the country’s digital landscape. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Maldives 2.0 Summit held at Barcelo Nasandhura in Malé, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, described the project as the start of the nation’s digital transformation.

Launched under the initiative of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, ‘Maldives 2.0’ seeks to digitise government functions and services, creating a more efficient and interconnected system for citizens. Minister Ihsan highlighted that this project aligns with President Muizzu’s vision for a digitally empowered Maldives, which will involve every sector of the Maldivian government and institutions.
Ihsan explained that the practical phase of this ambitious digital transformation will move forward quickly, overseen by the President and a special Digital Transformation Council, which will include experts in the field. The project was developed with input from global digital leaders and local IT professionals, ensuring it meets international standards.

One of the key speakers at the summit, Linnar Viik, a member of Estonia’s Digital Council and co-founder of the Estonian e-Governance Academy, emphasized the similarities between the Maldives and Estonia’s digital journey. Viik assured that technical support would be provided to the Maldives as it progresses with its digitalisation efforts.

The two-day Maldives 2.0 Summit will focus on the practical steps needed for the country’s digital transformation. It will bring together government agencies, IT experts, and international partners to outline the way forward and create a unified digital strategy for the nation.
As the Maldives embarks on this major shift, the ‘Maldives 2.0’ initiative promises to redefine the way government services are delivered, paving the way for a smarter and more connected future.
