Tree Top Hospital has reached a major medical milestone by successfully performing its first Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) implantation. The emergency procedure was carried out on a British tourist in critical cardiac condition, marking a breakthrough in the hospital’s cardiac care capabilities.
The hospital’s swift response was key to the successful outcome. The specialized AICD device was promptly sourced, minimizing delays and enabling the team to perform the procedure without unnecessary waiting. Coordination with specialist doctors was done efficiently, with all aspects of the treatment handled in-house.
Dr. Amit Agarwal, Head of Cardiology at Tree Top Hospital, led the diagnosis and planning stages. He highlighted that such cases often involve sudden cardiac death, with few patients surviving long enough to receive treatment—especially when located on remote islands. The quick intervention, therefore, proved vital.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Miqdhaadh Shareef, a well-known cardiology specialist in the Maldives. He explained that the patient was experiencing severe arrhythmias requiring constant monitoring and repeated shocks before the AICD could be implanted. The device now automatically regulates the patient's heartbeat, allowing a safe return to daily life.
Dr. Srivatsan Sridhar G, CEO of Tree Top Hospital, praised the medical team for their achievement. He noted that this life-saving procedure allows patients with serious heart conditions to access advanced care locally, without needing to travel abroad.
This success reflects Tree Top Hospital’s strong commitment to providing high-quality, timely cardiac care with the latest medical technology.
