Japan-Maldives Partnership Deepens with Maritime Security Grant

The Governments of Japan and the Maldives marked a new chapter in maritime cooperation today with the signing of an Exchange of Notes. The agreement was signed by Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Through this agreement, Japan has committed a grant of 400 million Japanese Yen—approximately USD 2.8 million—for mobility equipment to support the Maldives National Defence Force, Coast Guard. This includes the provision of two harbour crafts.

The vessels are expected to enhance the Coast Guard’s operational capacity across several key areas. They will support maritime security patrols in regions known for illegal activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and unregulated fishing. In addition, the vessels will be used in search and rescue missions, providing faster response in emergencies at sea.
Equipped for multi-role operations, the crafts will also help enforce laws protecting marine ecosystems. This initiative marks a major step in strengthening the Maldives’ maritime domain and safeguarding its surrounding waters.

Japan expressed hope that the assistance would enhance the Coast Guard’s mobility and contribute to effective maritime services throughout the Maldives.
