Vaadhoo to Go Fully Solar by Year-End, Says President Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a major step in the Maldives' renewable energy journey — Raa Atoll Vaadhoo will be fully powered by solar energy before the end of 2025.
Speaking during a 14-hour press conference, President Muizzu emphasized that the current administration is strongly focused on attracting investment in renewable energy. He noted that several projects are already in motion across the country.

Vaadhoo's transformation into a fully solar-powered island was first revealed during the President's visit there in January. “We have decided to make Raa Atoll Vaadhoo an island 100 percent powered through solar. It is something residents of Vaadhoo have also begun now very innovatively,” President Muizzu said, praising the local community’s efforts.

The President said the government sees Vaadhoo as a model island for solar power adoption and expects the project to be completed by year-end. The initiative is now ready to be awarded to a contractor and will serve as a pilot for expanding solar energy use to other islands.
This project aligns with a broader presidential pledge to generate 33 percent of the Maldives’ energy from renewable sources by the end of 2028, reducing the country's reliance on imported oil.

Additionally, a major renewable energy project, known as the 'Floating Solar' initiative, is planned for a lagoon in the Greater Malé Area. Expected to generate between 100 to 150 megawatts of solar energy, the government began seeking contractors for the project in March.
