State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced its decision to divert work being assigned to contractors to locals under a daily wage. The company highlights the trend of contractors opting to hire foreign laborers to do work under the contract, as the reason for this decision. Accordingly, this creates a great opportunity for unemployed locals to make a living in addition to giving a chance for people to work on a freelance basis.
For the purpose of this, STELCO will be formulating an independent workers’ list from which they will be selecting workers most suited for the project ongoing at that time and assigning the work. To register as an independent worker, you may fill this application form and submit it.
Keep in mind though, the only job requirements are;
· Being in good health
· Between the ages of 18 to 45
· Having completed secondary education
As there is not a lot of requirement to qualify for the work whereas applicants do not have to submit a Police Report, this also creates an opportunity for ex-convicts to get employed and make a living.
STELCO will be selecting independent workers to work on projects in relation to electrical services provided by them and also the burying of electric cables.
Independent workers shall be paid an amount between MVR 100 to MVR 250 per day. Additionally, a food allowance of MVR 175 will also be given daily.
Prior to this initiative, STELCO has also collaborated will Maldives Correctional Service to facilitate training programs and work opportunities for convicts and parolees.
