The cabinet has officially approved a generational tobacco ban targeting individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. This means the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products will be permanently prohibited for this age group.
The decision was made public on Sunday, with the ban scheduled to take effect from November 1, 2025. A six-month window has been given for enforcement agencies to revise regulations to align with the amended law.
Alongside this move, the cabinet has directed the Ministry of Finance and Planning to work closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure better access to tobacco cessation services.
This decision follows a public poll initiated by the President. While most participants favored applying the ban to those born in 2000 or later, the cabinet ultimately settled on the year 2007.
This comes after a separate ban on vapes was enforced on December 15 last year. That law introduced strict penalties for the sale and use of vaping products.
The generational ban marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to reduce tobacco use and promote public health.
