Velana International Airport Celebrates 59 Years of Aviation Milestones

On April 12, 1966, a historic moment unfolded as a Sri Lankan ACJR aircraft landed at Hulhulé Airport, carrying then-Maldivian Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir. That day marked the official opening of Hulhulé Airport—now known as Velana International Airport (VIA).

Exactly 59 years later, VIA celebrated its anniversary with a series of events, also setting the stage for next year’s 60th milestone. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and VIA officials said the anniversary marks both a proud reflection and a look forward to the airport’s future.
The celebrations began with a flag hoisting ceremony attended by MACL management, staff, and stakeholders. A 59-foot cake was cut to honour the occasion, followed by a symbolic friendship walk.

Speaking at the event, MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef reaffirmed the government’s—and especially the current administration’s—support for VIA’s continued development. He noted that while contractors are handling key infrastructure work, it is MACL’s dedicated staff who will bring these developments to life through daily operations.

Shareef emphasised the importance of meeting the needs of passengers and stakeholders while continuing to grow. A major highlight is the construction of VIA’s new terminal, which will handle up to 7.5 million passengers a year once completed. The expansion will also create around 1,800 new jobs and allow for increased airline operations.

The new terminal will feature aero boarding bridges, advanced baggage systems, retail shops, catering services, and VIP lounges. According to MACL, this project will transform VIA into a fully modern and world-class airport.
