Muizzu Promises Easier Dollar Access for Maldivian Students Abroad

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the foreign exchange issues faced by Maldivian students studying abroad under the government loan scheme.
Speaking during the third episode of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, President Muizzu highlighted that many students continue to struggle with obtaining US dollars at the official bank rate. This concern has been repeatedly raised by students during his foreign visits.

In response, the President stated he has already instructed the Minister of Finance to find a practical solution. Discussions are ongoing with the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority to ensure the process moves forward effectively.

He assured that students receiving government loans for overseas education will be granted access to US dollars at the bank rate. However, he stressed that any solution introduced must not negatively affect the domestic market. He also noted that the funds provided should only be used in the country where the student is studying.

The government is currently supporting more than 1,600 students abroad through its loan programme, in addition to other scholarship opportunities.

President Muizzu underlined that his administration remains focused on listening to the people, staying connected with the public, and making informed decisions through consultation.vb
