Seniors Face New Driving Limits With Local-Only Licenses

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has introduced new amendments requiring individuals over the age of 60 to obtain a special license to drive road vehicles. These updated rules apply specifically to motorcycles, three-wheelers, and small village pickups with engines under 60 cc.

The new license will be valid only within the village where it is issued and can only be used on roads where the speed limit is 30 km/h or less. It will not affect the general licensing process for those over 18, who can still obtain regular temporary or permanent licenses by passing the standard examinations.

However, for those aged 60 and above, an alternative pathway is available. Instead of completing full driving exams, seniors can attend a 4-hour training session to receive a special rural license. This license will be issued by rural councils and is valid for a period of 10 years. Once expired, it cannot be renewed unless the training program is repeated.

Importantly, the issuing authority or the Ministry reserves the right to revoke the license if a driver commits more than one traffic offense under this special category.
A fee of Rs. 250 will be charged for the license and the associated training program. The 2021 regulations did not require separate licenses for seniors, but the new amendment now sets clear rules for elderly drivers, shifting focus to rural safety and low-speed travel.

These changes aim to ensure safer roads in village areas while still allowing senior citizens the freedom to travel within their local communities.
