President Muizzu Pushes for Tobacco Ban to Protect Future Generations

In a move to protect the health of future generations, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives is considering a ban on tobacco use for people under 25. Speaking on the "With the People" podcast, President Muizzu shared his concerns about the rising number of young smokers and emphasized the importance of addressing this issue before it becomes a widespread habit.

Muizzu explained that he does not believe any government should allow young people to fall into the damaging habit of smoking, and that prevention is key. He outlined his plan to implement a "generation ban" to stop tobacco use among the youth, directing the country’s Health Minister to draft a cabinet paper after consulting with the relevant authorities.

The President has proposed a law that would ban tobacco for people born after 2000 or 2004, specifically targeting individuals aged 18 to 25. He believes it will be more effective to intervene early and prevent the next generation from becoming addicted to tobacco, rather than trying to reverse habits in older age groups.

Muizzu also encouraged smokers in other age groups to quit and called on tobacco importers and traders to stop bringing tobacco products into the Maldives. He emphasized that public health should remain a priority, free from political influence.

This proposed tobacco ban reflects President Muizzu's commitment to safeguarding public health, aiming to create a healthier future for the Maldives' younger generations
