The British High Commission in Malé, in partnership with UNDP and Villa College, recently hosted the GREAT Conversations on Climate Change Mitigation & Clean Energy event. Held over two days, the event aimed to enhance trade and investment opportunities in renewable energy between the UK and the Maldives, bringing together experts, policymakers, and business leaders to explore sustainable solutions to the country’s increasing energy demands.
The primary goal of the event was to strengthen cooperation on climate change mitigation, positioning the UK as a key partner in the Maldives’ renewable energy transition. The Maldives is committed to generating 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028 and reducing carbon emissions by 26% by 2030. To support this transition, panel discussions focused on key government initiatives and investment opportunities in renewable energy, with contributions from various ministries, including Tourism, Environment, Economic Development, and Finance.
Four British companies—QED Naval, Ryse Energy, Guard Global, and Green Pacific—presented their expertise in renewable technologies. QED Naval shared insights into tidal and wave energy solutions, while Ryse Energy highlighted its off-grid renewable systems for remote islands. Guard Global introduced carbon financing and renewable energy trading solutions, and Green Pacific showcased its work in solar energy projects in the Maldives. These presentations underscored the potential for collaboration between British businesses and Maldivian stakeholders, offering tailored solutions to meet the country's unique energy needs.
Networking sessions at the event allowed policymakers, industry leaders, and businesses to explore partnership opportunities. With over 50 participants, including climate experts, NGOs, and students, the event facilitated meaningful discussions on the future of clean energy in the Maldives.
A significant moment came with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNDP and the Capital Market Development Authority (CMDA), highlighting the commitment to fostering sustainable energy investments in the region. The event reinforced the importance of international collaboration in achieving climate goals and showcased the Maldives as an emerging market for renewable energy solutions.
