The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has successfully dredged 52.15 hectares of land in four key areas as part of the ongoing Rasmale project. As of the 9th of this month, work has been completed in Areas D, F, G, and L, marking a significant milestone. A total of 378 hectares will be reclaimed across these areas, with additional dredging taking place in Area J.
The Rasmale project, spearheaded by President Mohammed Muizzu, aims to address the Maldives’ housing shortage. The government has broken the project into 12 phases, with a total of 1,153 hectares of land to be dredged. The goal is to develop Rasmale as an environmentally friendly eco-city that will provide 65,000 homes.
Currently, the dredging work is being carried out by Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMC) and the Netherlands’ Boskalis. To speed up the process, the government is collaborating with more companies and plans to increase the number of dredgers this year.
The project, which is expected to be completed by December 18, will bring about a transformative change in the Maldives’ housing landscape, offering a sustainable solution for the country’s growing population.
