The government of Maldives has announced that the entire week of Eid al-Fitr 2025 will be a public holiday, following a directive issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid could fall either on March 30 or 31, with the official holidays spanning from March 31 to April 3 in the first scenario, or March 30 to April 1 if Eid falls a day earlier.
The extension of holidays is aimed at ensuring that employees can enjoy uninterrupted time with their families during the festive period. The holidays will last until April 3, and since Friday and Saturday follow, government offices will reopen on April 6, 2025.
In addition to the Eid break, government offices will also be closed from March 20 for the last 10 days of Ramadan. This extended holiday period will last 15 days, combining the break for the last ten days of Ramadan and the five days for Eid celebrations.
The decision to grant the last 10 days of Ramadan as a public holiday was made to encourage citizens to focus on religious practices. However, government agencies are required to continue providing essential services during this time.
