On Thursday, during a special ceremony held at Villa College’s QI Campus, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the College and Athama Foundation regarding training people in the tourism and hospitality industry.
According to Athama Foundation, whereas Maldives is heavily reliant on the tourism and hospitality industry for its overall development, it is of utmost importance that locals are well trained to work in the industry. They stress the point on that school leavers often shy away from the industry as there is little chance to get trained for a professional work environment prior to actually securing a job which has shown to have been a reason why they leave their jobs so early on. Hence, the ultimate aim of the training program is to act as a solution for this problem.
This will be conducted as part of Athama Foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility. They had chosen Villa College to join them in this venture as they see that the College is presently the best higher education institute operating in the country and deemed fit to conduct such a program.
Under the MoU, a course – Certificate 3 in Hospitality – will be offered for youths interested in the industry. For the first batch, a total of 20 students will be selected. This is a 4-month course which will comprise of both an academic and practical training components that will be held at a resort. Whilst the academic and the training will be facilitated by Villa College, the expenses incurred to do so will be covered by Athama Foundation.
