The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued an Orange Warning for the period from midnight to 3 am, impacting the region from Baa Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll. The warning comes in response to torrential rain and thunderstorms, with flooding expected to affect large parts of the Maldives.
Earlier, a Yellow Alert was issued for Kaafu Atoll to Meemu Atoll, forecasting heavy rain and gusty winds of up to 45 mph. Just an hour later, the alert was upgraded to Orange, expanding the area of concern.
An Orange Warning is issued when there is 90 mm of rainfall in one hour or 120 mm in six hours, accompanied by heavy rain and flooding risks. The Maldives has experienced continuous rainfall throughout the afternoon, with many roads in the Male' area flooded. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue teams are working to control flooding, while sandbags are being placed in vulnerable areas to protect properties.
With heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to continue, MET has urged the public to stay cautious and take necessary precautions.
