The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s Interim Government recently met with the Maldivian High Commissioner, Shiuneen Rasheed, to discuss the regularization of undocumented Bangladeshi expatriates and the recruitment of more workers from Bangladesh. The conversation highlighted the significant role Bangladeshi workers play, especially in the healthcare sector, with many Bangladeshi physicians contributing to the country’s medical services.
During the meeting, the Maldivian High Commissioner noted the growing number of Maldivian students in Bangladesh, particularly in medical fields, and welcomed the continued exchange. Bangladesh also expressed support for more Maldivian students pursuing education in the country.
Trade relations were another key focus, with both sides acknowledging expanding commercial ties, particularly in pharmaceuticals. The Maldives has also seen a 17.5% increase in Bangladeshi tourist arrivals over the past year. Discussions also touched on climate change, where the Maldives expressed interest in continuing collaboration with Bangladesh on environmental initiatives.
This meeting, which marked the High Commissioner’s first official role in Bangladesh, underscored the importance of cooperation in labor, education, trade, and climate change, further strengthening the partnership between the two nations.
