MPL Sets Container Clearance Goals for Ramadan

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to clear 150 containers each day during Ramadan, except on Fridays. The initiative aims to keep operations smooth during the busy month, with a reduced target of 100 containers on half days.

Head of Port Operations, Ilyas Mohamed, emphasized that priority would be given to perishables and general cargo, ensuring timely deliveries. To address space constraints, MPL will also transfer empty containers to Thilafushi over the next two months. A container terminal is under construction by MTCC to further enhance capacity.

Although the port can now store about 5,100 containers, it still faces challenges in meeting the demand for imports. Ilyas mentioned that while general cargo unloading was previously limited to two vessels, MPL can now handle three vessels simultaneously. The team has also added 19 new staff members to support the efforts.

In addition, highly perishable goods will be stored in a godown, and a temporary tent in Hulhumale' has been set up to ease the process of bringing in food produce during Ramadan. MPL’s goal is to streamline port operations and support the nation’s logistics needs during this critical period.
