During a recent official visit to Colombo, Maldives' Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel underscored the country's commitment to enhancing diplomatic, economic, and development relations with Sri Lanka. Meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the two ministers discussed expanding collaboration in various sectors, including trade, education, fisheries, and climate change.
The talks highlighted the deep historical ties between the two nations and focused on strengthening trade and investment. Both sides agreed to work towards creating a more favorable environment for private sector engagement and discussed finalizing agreements to facilitate trade and investment. Education was another key area of discussion, with a particular emphasis on extending cooperation to include professional and technical education and training programs.
Fisheries cooperation was also a major topic, with both countries agreeing to tackle illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing in their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). Dr. Khaleel emphasized the Maldives' willingness to share expertise in sustainable fishing practices, fish processing, and value-added fisheries products.
The ministers also addressed shared concerns over climate change and the vulnerabilities of small island nations. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together to find sustainable solutions, both bilaterally and multilaterally. Dr. Khaleel commended Sri Lanka’s leadership in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and stressed the importance of regional cooperation to tackle common challenges.
The talks also covered consular issues and the welfare of Maldivians living in Sri Lanka. At the conclusion of the meeting, Dr. Khaleel extended an invitation to Minister Herath to visit the Maldives, expressing confidence in the continued growth of bilateral relations in the coming years.
