Vice President Highlights Urgency of Climate Action at World Governments Summit

Vice President His Excellency Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef delivered a powerful keynote address at the Climate Change Forum during the World Governments Summit 2025, stressing that climate disasters do not wait for political negotiations. He highlighted the urgency of addressing the increasing intensity of storms, rising temperatures, and the global nature of climate challenges that do not recognize borders.

In his speech, the Vice President emphasized that mitigating climate impacts requires proactive leadership, particularly from major economies. He called for alignment in actions and for governments to honour their climate commitments, noting that global stability is dependent on mutual trust, not isolated efforts.

The Vice President made it clear that climate considerations must now be central to every decision made by governments. Whether social, economic, or financial, he urged that the first question must always focus on the impact on the environment. He also called on the international community to move beyond pledges and take real, tangible actions.

He highlighted the Maldives' own efforts to combat climate change, noting the country’s ambitious goal to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028, a target set by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at COP28. The Maldives is also implementing the Energy Roadmap 2024-2033 to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve energy security, taking decisive steps toward sustainability.

The Vice President was joined at the forum by Her Excellency Amna Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and His Excellency Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Madagascar. He led a high-level Maldivian delegation, underscoring the country's commitment to global climate action.
