Maldives to Launch Digital ID Cards with Full Data Transparency

The government of the Maldives is set to roll out a new digital identity system, following a directive from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The system will ensure that individuals are notified whenever their personal data is accessed by any authority, private organization, or service provider.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, revealed the initiative during a PSM forum on Friday. He explained that citizens will be able to track who accessed their data and for what purpose, requiring consent before any agency can proceed.

Currently, the e-Faas system offers digital access to ID cards, driver’s licenses, and marriage certificates, but digital ID cards have not yet been universally accepted. The system aims to meet international standards for digital identity management.
