The Maldives has unveiled its Third Climate Action Plan, solidifying the country’s role in the global fight against climate change. Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, emphasized the country’s commitment to addressing climate issues and enhancing its international position.
During a workshop introducing the plan, Minister Thoriq explained that extensive consultations were conducted nationwide to ensure the plan reflects the priorities of all regions. The new plan sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and includes strategies to strengthen the nation’s climate resilience.
As part of its commitment under the Paris Agreement, the Maldives is required to submit updated climate plans every five years. Although a low carbon-emitting country, the Maldives is taking bold steps in its latest plan, demonstrating proactive leadership in climate action.
The Ministry of Environment, which spearheaded the plan’s development, outlined key areas of focus, including climate finance, technology, capacity-building, and the engagement of youth, women, and children. The workshop also highlighted the importance of securing international support, both financially and technologically, to achieve the plan’s goals.
The Maldives recognizes that global cooperation, particularly under frameworks like the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, will be critical for aligning national efforts with broader sustainable development goals.
