MWSC Makes Strong Progress on Water Network Link

The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced that 65 percent of its ambitious project to link the water networks of Male' and Hulhumale' is now completed. Launched in 2016, the project faced delays but picked up pace last year. Currently, MWSC is working on cleaning, disinfecting, and pressure testing the five-kilometer, 20-inch-diameter main pipeline that connects the two islands.

The foundation work for the transfer pump stations in both Male' and Hulhumale' has been finished, with structural work progressing well—25 percent of the pump station in Male' and 60 percent in Hulhumale' are complete. MWSC aims to finalize the construction of the pump station buildings by March, with full system functionality expected in the second quarter of this year. Once operational, the system will be capable of pumping 800 tonnes of water per hour between the islands, ensuring a more reliable water supply for residents of both Male' and Hulhumale'. This marks a major step toward improving water infrastructure in the region.
