Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding in Male' as MET Office Issues Yellow Alert

The Maldives Meteorological Office (MET Office) reported that the heaviest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in the capital, Male’, with 130.7 mm of rain falling from 8 am yesterday to 8 am today. Hulhule’, home to Velana International Airport, saw the second highest rainfall at 79.5 mm, while Alif Alif atoll Thoddoo recorded 70.3 mm.

Flooding has affected roads in Male’, with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) reporting the removal of 6,835 tonnes of floodwater by 6 am today. The continuous rain has caused disruptions, with authorities working to manage the situation.

The MET Office has issued a Yellow Alert for areas from Shaviyani atoll to Meemu atoll, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and squalls throughout the day. The southern islands are expected to experience thunder, while wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph. The forecast predicts calm seas in the southern atolls with moderate waves in other regions, where seas may reach 4 to 6 feet.
The heavy weather conditions and ongoing storms are expected to persist today, and the MET Office is advising residents and travelers to remain cautious.
