In a recent address at the third China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation in Kunming, China, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, emphasized the need for ocean and maritime development decisions to be grounded in evidence-based science and innovative technology.
Minister Shiyam highlighted the critical importance of oceans and marine ecosystems to the Maldivian economy, underscoring that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives are particularly vulnerable to environmental challenges. He stressed that preserving ocean resources is essential, not only for the Maldives’ future but for the global community as well.
The Minister also pointed to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), noting that its 2024 theme, "delivering the science we need for the ocean we want," aligns with the Maldives' ongoing efforts to protect its marine environment. He reiterated that scientific research, innovation, and global collaboration are key to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and safeguarding marine resources.
Minister Shiyam concluded by stressing the importance of global cooperation, sharing expertise, and empowering communities to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ultimately ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
