Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Has Proudly Served The Nation For 73 Years

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is a state-owned multi-specialty hospital located at the west end of Male’ City. Yesterday, the hospital celebrated its 73rd year anniversary in the capacity of the biggest hospital in the Maldives whilst having well-served more than dozens of people throughout its history.

On 11th January 1948, the story of IGMH begins under the name – Doctaruge – the first healthcare facility providing modern medical care in the country; having been established by the Government of Maldives. This facility was later transformed to ‘Central Hospital’ which would serve the nation for several years following this. In October of 1986, the Government sought out assistance from the Government of India, to build a large scale hospital. From this moment on, began the work on the IGMH building we see now which was built in dedication to Ms. Indira Gandhi – the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India – as a gift. And then, Central Hospital’s services were moved to this location.

By the time of their 73rd anniversary, IGMH has evolved into a tertiary hospital providing high-quality specialist consultations in a wide range of areas. Moreover, the hospital houses investigative and imaging technologies in diagnostics, providing efficient patient-centered healthcare; fully covered by the social healthcare insurance – Aasandha.

At present, IGMH is in the process of accrediting its services to meet international standards and guidelines.
