Maldives to Send Record Number of Pilgrims for Umrah in December

In December 2024, Saudi Arabia is set to welcome a record number of pilgrims from the Maldives for the Umrah pilgrimage. The sacred journey, which holds deep religious significance for Muslims, has seen a steady rise in the number of Maldivians making the trip in recent years. This year, both young people and entire families are among those traveling to Mecca to perform the pilgrimage.

According to the Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL), 5,796 pilgrims are scheduled to depart for Mecca in December. The first group of pilgrims left on Sunday, with the final group set to depart on 27th December. While the Ministry of Islamic Affairs notes that the average number of Maldivian pilgrims for Umrah in December is typically around 4,000, the Ministry confirmed that this year’s numbers will break records.

There are currently about 50 registered Umrah groups in the Maldives, but estimates suggest that the actual number of pilgrims could reach as high as 8,000 this month, including those traveling independently.

The growing number of pilgrims reflects the increasing importance of Umrah for Maldivian Muslims, offering a spiritual opportunity to renew their faith and cleanse their souls during this sacred journey.
