New Terminal at Velana International Airport Set to Open by Mid-2025

Velana International Airport (VIA) is on track to open its new terminal by mid-2025, according to Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Originally planned for partial opening by the end of 2024, the decision was made to delay the launch to avoid disruptions during the busy tourist season.

Following consultations with airline operators, it was agreed to open the entire terminal during the low season in mid-2025. This delay will help ensure smoother operations during the high season, which is crucial for the Maldives' tourism-driven economy.

The new terminal, which spans 78,000 square meters, is 85% complete and will replace the existing international terminal. It will dramatically increase capacity, handling up to 7 million passengers annually, compared to the current terminal's 1.5 million. The new facility will feature modern amenities such as aero boarding bridges, advanced baggage handling systems, and expanded spaces for retail, dining, and passenger services.

Once operational, the terminal is expected to improve the overall travel experience, supporting the Maldives' continued growth as a global tourism hub. MACL is working closely with contractors to ensure the terminal is ready for its grand opening in June or July 2025.
