President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has joined global leaders at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to address pressing climate issues. This year’s theme, “In Solidarity For A Green World,” emphasizes the importance of collective action to combat climate change. The Maldives is using this platform to share its ongoing climate resilience efforts and its work toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During his address, President Muizzu will continue advocating for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and highlight the Maldives' ambitious climate agenda. Last year, at COP28, he announced plans to plant five million trees nationwide and pledged to generate 33% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources within the next five years.
COP29’s discussions will focus on setting a new global financial target, improving international collaboration, and overcoming barriers to the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). President Muizzu’s participation underscores the Maldives’ commitment to environmental sustainability, as he shares the nation’s climate goals and future strategies in his upcoming national address.
