In a significant move to combat plastic waste, the Coca-Cola Foundation, in collaboration with the Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) and the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), has successfully exported a baled container of used PET bottles to Malaysia and China for recycling. This initiative is part of the Foundation's ongoing Island PET Collection Project, aimed at establishing an effective recycling mechanism for plastic waste throughout the Maldives.
Baling the bottles has improved the efficiency of the waste management process, enabling the transportation of larger volumes. The Foundation is also committed to expanding plastic collection efforts beyond Male', developing systems for recycling across various islands.
During the ceremony marking this milestone, the Coca-Cola Foundation presented WAMCO with a pickup truck and a baler, further demonstrating its commitment to enhancing waste management capabilities. MOPA President Ahmed Maumoon hailed the project as a "revolutionary step" in addressing plastic pollution, while WAMCO's Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel emphasized its role in supporting sustainability efforts.
Carlos Pagoaga, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, stated that this initiative aims to foster a sustainable culture and economy in the Maldives. By collaborating with local partners, the project seeks to improve environmental protection and boost recycling efforts across the nation.
