Maldives to Implement DNA Testing for Thalassemia

Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim has announced that the Maldives will introduce DNA testing for specific thalassemia diagnoses in government hospitals, along with prenatal testing for the condition. This initiative was unveiled during the launch of the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Management Master Plan.

Minister Nazim emphasized the government's commitment to tackling thalassemia-related challenges. He mentioned ongoing discussions with representatives from Italy and Cyprus to learn effective management strategies, with plans to finalize a memorandum of understanding.
The minister also highlighted the role of the newly formed Thalassemia Fund Committee and the National Blood Council in providing vital services. He noted that signing the memorandum for the establishment of a Thalassemia Hospital is a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.

The Thalassemia Prevention and Control Management Master Plan, along with the new hospital, marks an important advancement in strengthening the country’s health infrastructure and improving care for those affected by thalassemia.
