At the launch of the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Master Plan for the next decade, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef highlighted the critical role of blood donation in supporting individuals with thalassemia. Speaking at the event, he expressed that blood donation should be a joyful act, serving as a lifeline for affected children.
Vice President Latheef underscored the importance of healthcare for children with thalassemia, advocating for equal opportunities in society. He called on the public to contribute by donating blood, which is vital for these children’s survival.
He also praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to improving healthcare services for thalassemia patients, particularly through the establishment of a specialized hospital. This initiative, driven by compassion, aims to reduce the suffering of families dealing with this condition.
During the ceremony, an agreement was signed for the construction of the thalassemia hospital in Hulhumale’ Phase 2. Meadow Asia and Chin Hin Group Berhad were awarded the contract, with the Health Minister, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, signing on behalf of the Maldivian government. The project financing has been arranged by Sinoma Industry Engineering Company.
The planned facility will include a three-story layout featuring an emergency room, canteen, children’s playground, laboratory, blood transfusion unit, radiology department, and a blood and organ transplant unit. This new hospital is part of President Muizzu's pledge to enhance healthcare for thalassemia patients, ensuring they receive the necessary services sustainably.
