Maldives and Japan Collaborate on Solar Water Desalination Project

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim recently met with Japan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, to discuss a solar PV and NAS battery storage water desalination plant. This project is supported by the Government of Japan and aims to enhance water security in the Maldives.

During the meeting, Minister Thoriq emphasized the shared commitment of both nations to advance this initiative, highlighting its potential for environmentally sustainable energy solutions. He expressed appreciation for Japan’s ongoing support, noting that the project would strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Ambassador Takeuchi reiterated Japan’s dedication to environmental protection and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for ongoing cooperation on similar projects in the future.

Earlier this year, Sino Soar Hybrid Technology Company Limited was contracted to install energy management systems in solar PV systems across 20 islands, with a project cost of USD 1.2 million. This work is expected to be completed within four months of its start. The Maldivian government aims to produce 33% of its electricity from renewable sources in the next five years, with current solar power installations meeting about 6% of the nation’s energy needs.
