India's RuPay card service was officially launched in the Maldives today, marking a significant advancement in financial transactions between the two nations. The introduction of RuPay, part of India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI), was announced during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development, the RuPay card will modernize the Maldives' financial system, especially for business transactions, and strengthen bilateral relations with India. The service is particularly beneficial for Indian tourists, who are a vital part of the Maldives' tourism industry, as it simplifies their financial transactions while visiting.
“India is a key trading partner for Maldives and the RuPay card service will facilitate financial transactions between the two countries and further expand trade with India, especially for small and medium enterprises,” the statement said.
This initiative aligns with President Muizzu's commitment to implementing digital finance solutions in the Maldives. However, it's important to note that the RuPay service is currently available only to Indian nationals. While Maldivians often travel to India for medical treatment, the service is not yet accessible to them.
