Road safety awareness campaign by the Traffic Management Department, Maldives Police Services in partnership with Allied Insurance Company has begun in an official ceremony held in Hulhumale’ Central Park. Special Guest of the event, State Minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ali Nazeer was joined by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abdul Mannan and senior officials of the organization, along with Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakr, and General Manager and staff of the Allied Insurance Company.
In his speech, State Minister, Ali Nazeer stated that taking safety precautions on the road is a responsibility of every person not only for their own safety, but for the safety of everyone else as well. Statistics show an alarming indication that one in every three people instigated by police on the road violates safety guidelines. This alone shows the importance of spreading awareness among the public regarding such matters.
Further in the ceremony, hashtag “#AmalunDhahkaanan” was introduced to be used by the Traffic Police Management Department on social media in their efforts to give information on road safety. Two billboards were also placed strategically near Dharubaaruge and on the highway to Hulhumale’.
The run will continue on until 1800 hrs on January 16, 2021. A total of more than 850 runners will run to accomplish a combined length of 5665km signifying the total number of accidents on the road between 2018 and 2021. All participants will receive T-shirts with informative messages on them in addition to a medal for participation.
