Maldives Strengthens Commitment at UN: President Meets with Secretary-General

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, highlighting the Maldives' commitment to actively engaging within the UN framework. The discussion centered on addressing critical issues faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly climate change, sustainable development, and ocean conservation.

During their meeting, President Muizzu affirmed the Maldives' dedication to advocating for strong international cooperation to tackle these urgent challenges. He also outlined the fiscal difficulties the country is experiencing, sharing that the government is pursuing a reform agenda aimed at reducing debt and stabilizing its fiscal health. The President emphasized the need for support from bilateral and multilateral partners in this process.

In response, Secretary-General Guterres praised the Maldives for its proactive measures regarding climate change adaptation and expressed his commitment to assist the nation in these efforts.

The meeting took place as President Muizzu attends the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, marking his first participation at the UNGA. This event coincides with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives’ membership in the United Nations.
He is accompanied by a high-level delegation, reflecting the nation's dedication to contributing to global discussions on pressing issues.
