Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has launched its Resort Collection Service in Noonu Atoll, starting with Noku Maldives. This expansion follows earlier initiatives in Raa Atoll and addresses ongoing issues with resort waste management.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, emphasized that the service was necessary due to inadequate waste disposal by resorts and failures by contractors to transport waste properly. In response, WAMCO has stepped in to manage waste collection directly from the resorts.
The new agreement with Noku Maldives marks a significant step in WAMCO's efforts to streamline waste management. The company, led by Managing Director Shaheed Ibrahim, now collects waste from resorts in both Noonu and Raa Atolls and transports it to the waste management center in Vandhoo, Thaa Atoll.
WAMCO is working to secure additional agreements with more resorts, offering one-year contracts and various service packages. The company aims for its resort waste collection services to become a major revenue source, with a goal to cover 50% of Maldivian resorts by mid-next year.
