The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, has outlined the government's efforts to enhance veterinary services in the Maldives. In a recent interview on PSM News, Minister Rameela announced plans to provide affordable access to medicines and vaccines for household animals.
The Ministry is working to expand its veterinary services by recruiting specialist doctors and nurses to set up new veterinary clinics. Despite the presence of private veterinary services in the country, there is currently no robust system for diagnosing and treating animal diseases effectively. Additionally, essential medical treatments for pets are limited.
Minister Rameela also highlighted challenges related to the lack of equipment for special health tests on imported animals. This gap is being addressed as part of a broader initiative to improve animal safety and care. Discussions are ongoing with the State Trading Organization (STO) and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) to make medicines and treatment equipment more accessible.
Furthermore, an animal law has been drafted and submitted to the Attorney General’s Office to strengthen regulations for both imported and domesticated animals. The Ministry is also inspecting pet shops to ensure compliance with new standards.
