In a recent address, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu underscored that the true measure of the Maldives' success will be how much it improves the lives of its people, rather than just focusing on technological advancements. Speaking at the "Summit of the Future Side Event: A Vision for an Intelligence-Driven Future for Maldives," the President highlighted the dual role of digitalization in both economic growth and enhancing the quality of life.
The event, held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UN Maldives, is a prelude to the Summit of the Future set for September 22nd and 23rd in New York. Key figures at the event included Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and UN Resident Coordinator Bradley James Busetto, among others.
President Muizzu emphasized that digitalization serves more than just economic interests; it also plays a critical role in improving daily life and combating climate change. He pointed out that smart technologies, such as early warning systems, are essential for environmental sustainability.
A key initiative discussed was the Digital Maldives Program, which aims to prepare the youth for the digital economy and ensure that women have equal opportunities. The President also introduced the Maldives Development Bank, designed to address the funding gap for projects focused on digital innovation and sustainable development.
Furthermore, President Muizzu stressed that digitalization should be seen as a tool for building a resilient future rather than an end in itself. He also called for enhanced global cooperation to strengthen cybersecurity, protect data, and combat misinformation.
The Summit of the Future, organized by the United Nations, will bring together global leaders to explore collaborative efforts for a better future.
