President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has mandated a series of stringent measures to enhance road safety, following a tragic accident in Hulhumale' that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old local resident. On Friday, the president directed all relevant authorities to enforce eight new regulations aimed at tackling speeding and reckless driving.
In a social media post, President Muizzu emphasized the urgent need for these changes to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of residential areas. The measures include:
- Revocation of Drifting Permit: The Housing Development Corporation’s permit for drifting and racing in Hulhumale', issued on October 19, 2023, has been immediately canceled.
- Stricter Penalties: Laws will be amended to impose tougher penalties on speeding and reckless driving.
- Vehicle Confiscation: Vehicles exceeding speed limits will be stopped, and their drivers’ licenses will be confiscated. Such vehicles will also be impounded.
- Restrictions on High-Power Vehicles: Amendments will prohibit the use of high-horsepower vehicles on public roads.
- Ban on Noise-Enhancing Modifications: New regulations will prevent the import of devices that create excessive noise through vehicle modifications.
- Speed Detection Improvements: The plan to install speed breakers and cameras in 150 Hulhumale' locations will be expedited.
- Graduated License System: A new system will introduce point deductions for traffic violations.
- Enhanced Police Enforcement: Police efforts to enforce traffic laws will be strengthened.
President Muizzu stressed that these measures will be closely monitored to ensure their effectiveness. This initiative responds to public concerns about road safety and aims to address the recent surge in accidents related to high-speed racing and dangerous driving practices.
