The MV Niumat is scheduled to arrive at Hithadhoo Regional Port on Wednesday, according to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). The vessel, coming from Tuticorin, India, is transporting approximately 300 metric tonnes of goods, including vegetables, fruits, and general cargo.
MPL CEO Mohamed Vajeeh highlighted this shipment as a significant achievement of ongoing government efforts to ensure regular cargo deliveries from India to Addu.
This delivery is part of a broader strategy to stabilize perishable cargo supply. Historically, perishable goods were transported to Addu in wooden ships, but recent arrangements now involve steel ships for more reliable delivery.
Since July of last year, MPL and Hithadhoo Port have worked with India's Finance Group to establish a permanent cargo route. The first steel ship carrying 150 tonnes of cargo arrived in Addu on July 10.
