The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) reported a 12.5% increase in fish deliveries last week, with 467 tonnes weighed compared to 415 tonnes the previous week. This upturn follows a significant decline in national fisheries. The number of boats delivering fish also rose, from 119 to 192.
The highest catch in recent weeks occurred on the 3rd of this month, when 44 boats delivered 135 tonnes of fish. To further support the fishing industry, MIFCO will provide up to 10 tonnes of ice on credit to fishing boats, with repayments to be made after the ice is used. Additionally, the company is speeding up payments to fishermen, with the government ensuring funds are released within two weeks. So far, Rs 1.1 billion has been disbursed to fishermen.
MIFCO has streamlined processes to help fishermen, including easier fish purchasing arrangements at their collection centers and on their boats.
