Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) is set to start direct flights from Baku to Velana International Airport (VIA) in the Maldives. The new service will operate twice a week and is timed to align with the Maldives' peak tourism season. Although Azerbaijan isn't a major source of tourists for the Maldives, the introduction of these direct flights is expected to increase visitor numbers from the region.
The Maldives' Ministry of Tourism anticipates a positive impact on tourist arrivals from Azerbaijan with this new connection. Currently, the Maldives is served by 42 airlines from 22 countries, and between January and July this year, 1.1 million tourists visited the island nation.
