According to police data, the Maldives has seen 1,907 traffic accidents so far this year, a significant rise from 1,476 incidents reported by August 2023. The majority of these accidents occurred in the Male' area, where 125 people were injured and five lost their lives. March saw the highest number of accidents, with 301 recorded. Accidents have been notably frequent in Male', Hulhumale', and on the Sinamale' Bridge.
Tragic incidents this year include the death of 23-year-old motorcyclist Hassan Samah, who suffered fatal head injuries in a collision with a speeding sports car. Another serious crash occurred on July 31, involving a sports car and a stationary vehicle in Hulhumale' Phase 2, resulting in severe injuries. In response to the escalating crisis, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed relevant authorities to address the rising accident rates urgently following a recent fatal crash.
