On 4th January, it was announced that Qatar Airways and LATAM Airlines Brasil has agreed to expand their Codeshare Agreement for a second time. The codeshare was first initiated in 2016 and expanded once in June 2019.
Codeshares are a great tool for both airlines and passengers as it allows airlines to access an additional demographic of travelers who may not otherwise choose to fly with them. This opens a more diverse network of destinations that can be reached on a single flight booking, even if the booking airline does not even fly there.
The new expanded agreement will allow Qatar Airways passengers to book travel on 45 additional LATAM Airlines Brasil flights and to access over 40 domestic and international destinations on the South American carrier’s network including Brasilia, Curitiba, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Rio de Janeiro, São José, Lima (Peru), Montevideo (Uruguay) and Santiago (Chile).
On the other hand, LATAM Airlines Brasil passengers shall benefit from being able to book travel to eight additional Qatar Airways’ destinations such as Bangkok, Hongkong, Maldives, Nairobi, Seoul and Tokyo in addition to Qatar Airways’ connecting flights to destinations such as Baku, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Moreover, through an existing loyalty cooperation, frequent fliers with both airlines are able to earn and redeem miles for travel across the partners’ complete network as well as recognition of their tier status at select airports with benefits such as priority check-in and priority boarding.
However, both the airlines note that the codeshare will be subject to global travel policy changes in respective to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
