Strengthening Audit Capabilities in Atoll Councils: Minister Adam Shareef's Vision

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has stressed the need to strengthen internal audit processes within atoll councils to address and correct mistakes. Speaking at the inauguration of a new training programme, he emphasized the critical role that robust internal audits play in improving the governance and accountability of local councils.

Minister Adam Shareef acknowledged that while errors may occur within council operations, these are unlikely to be intentional. He highlighted the importance of enhancing internal audit mechanisms to effectively identify and rectify such mistakes, ensuring smoother operations across the islands.
The training programme, organized by the Ministry of Cities and the Local Government Authority (LGA), is designed to improve the state procurement system, financial management, and administrative practices within the councils. Over 170 participants from 40 local island councils and five atolls are attending the online sessions.

According to the ministry, this initiative will significantly benefit council employees by reinforcing their skills in administrative and financial management. By focusing on strengthening internal audits, the programme aims to build more resilient and efficient atoll councils, ultimately leading to better service delivery and governance at the local level.

Minister Adam Shareef reiterated the ministry's commitment to supporting local councils through such initiatives, which are crucial for the ongoing development and management of local government systems in the Maldives.
