Maldives National University Introduces Specialized Courses in Fisheries and Agriculture

The Maldives National University (MNU) has announced the launch of new courses in fisheries and agriculture, expanding its educational offerings. Enrolment for these courses is now open and will remain available until 14:00hrs on Tuesday next week.

The new courses are divided between the Faculty of Engineering, Science, and Technology and the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. The Faculty will offer advanced certifications in several agriculture-related areas:

  • Advanced Certificate in Horticulture (Fulltime, blended): Available in Male’, L. Gan, and S. Hithadhoo.
  • Advanced Certificate in Mushroom Cultivation (Fulltime, blended): Available in Kulhudhuffushi City.
  • Advanced Certificate in Poultry Farming (Fulltime, blended): Available in S. Hithadhoo.

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will provide various certifications in fisheries:

  • National Certificate 3 in Sports Fishing Guiding (Fulltime, blended): Offered in Male’, Kulhudhuffushi City, and S. Hithadhoo.
  • National Certificate 1, 2, and 3 in Fish Processing and Quality Control (Fulltime, blended): Offered in Male’ and L. Gan.

Detailed information about these courses is available on the university’s website. Prospective students can apply online through portal.mnu.edu.mv or contact MNU’s Student Services for additional information at hotline 1445.

These courses stem from an agreement between the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and MNU signed in December last year. The establishment of fisheries colleges across MNU’s atoll campuses is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge made during the 43rd Fishermen’s Day ceremony.

Despite the long-standing importance of fisheries in the Maldives, higher education opportunities in this field have been limited. These new courses are designed to address this gap and enhance academic and professional opportunities in both fisheries and agriculture.
