State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed plans to establish a charging station for electric vehicles in Malé. The station, currently under construction on Dhonandharaadha Magu near STELCO’s head office, is expected to be operational soon and accessible to the public.
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy stated that this initiative supports President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s environmental policies, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint and encourage the use of electric vehicles in the Maldives. “The charging station will serve both four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles, promoting a sustainable future,” Director Hussain Fahmy said.
The charging station design is inspired by South Korea, which boasts the highest number of public charging stations globally, with one station for every three cars. Fahmy also noted the full cooperation of Malé City Council in the project.
This initiative was originally proposed by President Muizzu during his tenure as Mayor of Malé, with the Transport Committee of Malé City Council conducting the necessary studies and planning. The station represents a significant step towards making Malé a greener, more sustainable city by encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles among residents.
