Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and State Trading Organization (STO) have signed an agreement to provide bunkering services in Ihavandhippolhu, a key northern region of the Maldives. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim and STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim at a ceremony held at MPL’s head office.
This collaboration comes as preparations are being finalized to launch bunkering services in the northern Maldives. Although initially planned for August 22, the launch date has faced multiple postponements. Despite this, the partnership between MPL and STO is set to move forward, with both companies agreeing to work together to offer these services in the most convenient and efficient manner.
MPL has emphasized that the two companies will not only provide bunkering services but also work together to market them effectively. In addition to international bunkering, STO will offer offshore bunkering services, while MPL will handle pilotage and other essential maritime services.
MPL CEO Wajeeh highlighted the significance of the northern Maldives in international maritime routes, stating that the introduction of bunkering and maritime services in this region will greatly benefit the country. He noted that even without marketing, the island council of Uligan has recorded consistent monthly visits from six to eight cargo boats seeking water services. The provision of both oil and water services in this area is expected to establish a profitable business, further enhancing the region's economic prospects.
