First Lady Sajidha Mohamed highlighted ongoing challenges faced by women in the Maldives tourism industry during the opening ceremony of the "Maldives Travel Conference - Women's Edition 2024," held today at Hotel Jen. Despite the sector's successful 50-year history, she emphasized that significant barriers remain for women, particularly those working in resorts.
The First Lady underscored the need to address societal perceptions that hinder women's progress in tourism. "It's concerning that even after 50 years of success, women in the tourism industry, especially in resorts, still face significant challenges due to societal views," she stated.
She pointed out that discrimination based on gender is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to efforts toward achieving gender equality in the workplace. The low number of women working in the tourism sector, particularly in resorts, is attributed to the lack of a conducive environment, social stigma, and limited opportunities for women in managerial roles.
Additionally, the First Lady addressed the broader challenges women face in the Maldives' work environment. She emphasized the importance of creating a supportive workplace that acknowledges women's specific needs, such as maternity leave, and fosters their professional growth.
For real change in the tourism sector, she stressed the need to listen to women's voices and address the challenges they face in the workplace. "If we are serious about developing robust policies in tourism, it is essential to consider the perspectives and challenges of women," she added.
During the ceremony, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) honored the First Lady with a commemorative plaque, recognizing her contributions to women's empowerment in the tourism industry.
